Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah, is an American performer, actress and a singer. Queen Latifah's performance in the fields of music, film and television has resulted in her receiving a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. an officer in the police force. The couple divorced after Latifah turned ten. Latifah, who was born and brought up within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah can be described as an Arabic word that means "delicate and gentle". The cousin she had granted it to her at the age of eight. Latifah was always tall and tall. Standing 5'10", she was the strong forward for her high school basketball team. She sang the song home from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah is among the founding participants of Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective made up of DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. He emailed the recorded to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the track and was signed by Latifah in 1988 to release her first track Wrath of My Madness.
